Books for all

From In Transition by Jens Olof Lasthein

From At Home by Jirka Ernest

A few years ago, I discovered a not-for-profit bookmaker that just publishes online PDF books called Democratic Books. Any photographer can apply for free and any viewer can download a PDF version of the book for free (they even include the instructions and recommendations on how to print). Each book reaches 4500 subscribers. Here are the photographers that they have published so far:

In January 2006, Adam Holtzman started Reproductions Gallery an online gallery dedicated to the idea of making fine art photography available in a way that is both benificial to both consumers and artists. Each print is available for $30 and printed on Fuji Crystal Archive photographic paper. Here is a selection from each of the artists on the site.

Artkrush website

Sign up for Artkrush emails, if you want to. They have great reviews, recommendations, etc. Well, here is the tag line:

Artkrush is a bimonthly email magazine covering the key figures, exhibitions, and trends in international art and design.

Plus you can sign up for Boldtype focusing on fiction, Earplug for music, JCReport for Fashion and Activate for news.

Currently, there is a slightly descriptive review of Roger Ballen's photographs (Trent Debord's favorite photographer) and an interview with Tomoko Sawada currently on the site.

The Whale Hunt

photo © Jonathan Harris
thewhalehunt.org initially appears to be your average photography website, but "was developed as an experimental interface for storytelling." The interface link explains the complexities of the entire site. Then when ready, you begin the whale hunt by loads on the "Preparing for the Hunt" page. Next, you are introduced to all the interactive functions of this site. Photos from the project fall into place as the chronological mosiac fall into place. The order of the project can be viewed through a more traditional timeline, a pinwheel or a heartbeat chart with the faster beats symbolizing more photographic activity. Jonathan Harris who shot the smaller digital images has other interactive websites located at number27.org.
